1. How a Quenching Furnace Works

A quenching furnace follows a three-step heat treatment process:

Step 1: Heating (Austenitization)

  • The metal (usually steel) is heated to a critical temperature (e.g., 750–950°C for steels) in a controlled atmosphere.

  • This transforms the microstructure into austenite, making the metal soft and ready for quenching.

  • Heating methods: Electric resistance, gas-fired, induction, or salt baths.

Step 2: Soaking (Holding at Temperature)

  • The metal is held at the target temperature to ensure uniform heat distribution.

  • Soaking time depends on material thickness and composition.

Step 3: Quenching (Rapid Cooling)

  • The heated part is rapidly submerged in a quenching medium (oil, water, polymer, or gas).

  • The cooling rate determines final hardness and microstructure (e.g., martensite for high hardness).
