Vertical Pit Type Industrial Heat Treatment Furnace 

 

 Process Control in Gas Carburizing

Precision control ensures consistent case depth and hardness. Key factors:

A. Carbon Potential (CP) Control

  • Definition: The ability of the furnace atmosphere to transfer carbon to the steel.

  • Control Methods:

    • Oxygen Probes – Measure O₂ to estimate carbon potential.

    • Infrared (IR) Analyzers – Monitor CO₂ and CH₄ levels.

    • Dew Point Sensors – Measure moisture in the furnace.

B. Temperature & Time

  • Typical Range: 870–950°C (1600–1740°F)

  • Diffusion Time:

    • Shallow Case (0.1–0.5 mm): 1–4 hours

    • Deep Case (1–3 mm): 8–24 hours

C. Gas Composition

  • Common Gases:

    • Natural gas (CH₄), Propane (C₃H₈), Endothermic gas (Rx gas: 20% CO, 40% H₂, 0% CH₄)

    • Diluent Gases: Nitrogen (N₂) to control carbon potential.
