Process Steps

  1. Loading: Parts placed in trays or fixtures (avoiding contact).

  2. Heating: Ramped to carburizing temperature under protective atmosphere.

  3. Carburizing: Carbon-rich gas (e.g., C₃H₈) diffuses into steel (hours to days, depending on case depth).

  4. Diffusion: Optional step to reduce surface carbon concentration.

  5. Quenching: Rapid cooling (oil, water, or gas) to harden the surface.

  6. Tempering: Relieves stresses (typically 150–200°C).

Advantages vs. Alternatives

  • Pros:

    • Precise case depth control (0.1–2.0 mm typical).

    • Superior surface hardness (HRC 58–65) with core toughness.

    • Cost-effective for medium-to-high production volumes.

  • Cons:

    • Slower than plasma/ion carburizing.
